How to Choose the Right Used Engine for Your Vehicle
July 3, 2026 · By CraftAutoParts Team

Choosing a used engine is one of the most cost-effective ways to keep an aging vehicle on the road. A properly sourced used engine can deliver years of reliable service at a fraction of the cost of a rebuilt or brand-new unit.
1. Match the Engine Code, Not Just the Model
Two vehicles of the same make, model and year can carry entirely different engines. Always cross-reference the engine code (also called the VIN 8th digit on U.S. vehicles) to guarantee bolt-on fitment.
2. Ask About Mileage & Compression
Reputable suppliers document the mileage of every used engine and can provide a compression test report. Anything under 100,000 miles with even compression across all cylinders is considered a healthy pull.
3. Look for a Written Warranty
Never accept a used engine without a written warranty — 90 days is the industry minimum; 6–12 months is ideal.
4. Plan for Peripheral Replacements
When you install a used engine, plan to replace timing components, gaskets, water pump and thermostat at the same time. It's the cheapest labour you'll ever pay for.
