OEM vs Aftermarket vs Used Parts: What's the Difference?

When it's time to replace a part, you have three main options: OEM, aftermarket and used. Each has clear pros and cons — and the right choice depends on your budget, the age of your vehicle and how long you plan to keep it.

OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer)

OEM parts are made by (or for) the vehicle manufacturer to the exact same spec as the parts that came off the assembly line. They're the most expensive option, but they guarantee perfect fitment and are typically covered by a manufacturer warranty.

Aftermarket

Aftermarket parts are produced by third-party manufacturers. Quality varies widely — from budget parts that barely last a year to premium brands that outperform OEM. For common wear items like brake pads and filters, top-tier aftermarket parts are often the best value.

Used (Recycled) Parts

Used parts pulled from salvage vehicles are the most economical option for major components — engines, transmissions, body panels and electronics. When sourced from a reputable dismantler with documented mileage and a written warranty, they can be as reliable as a rebuilt unit at half the cost.
